What ever happen to nicknames in Baseball? Who has the best nickname now days?

I remember watching Oil Can Boyd pitch for Boston. Back in the 80's it seemed like everyone had a nickname. I think "The Rocket" is the last real nickname.|||Covelli Loyce "Coco" Crisp

Calvin "Pokey" Reese, Jr.

A-Roid

Ivan Roidriguez

Barroid Bonds

Roidger Clemens

Jose Canuinjectme

The Big Hurt Myself Injecting|||What happened to nicknames is that there aren't many millionaires who use them. There IS Scooter Libby, but not a lot. Pudge and Coco are the best going, now, but in the future fans will be instructed to "Boo MR. Ortiz" or "Go, MR. Ramirez."|||Forget Big Papi. That's not even David Ortiz's best nickname.

David Ortiz is also refered to as "Cookie Monster".

Check his baseballreference page. They tell you there.|||You are so right. Names like Tom Terrific, Stan the Man, Sudden Sam, Hammerin' Hank, Say Hey Kid, Wild Thing, or The Bird are gone.

Today's best nickname has to be "Big Papi" though "The Big Unit" is still out there and throwing.|||The hayday of nicknames was when Chris Berman was making one for everyone on Sportscenter. Most of the ones that are left were most likely Berman glosses that have stuck still.

George "Ding-Dong Taco" Bell|||Here are a few...

Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez...(although he is certainly not the first "Pudge").

David "Big Papi" Ortiz....|||David"Big Papi" Ortiz|||Ryan Theriot is aptly nicknamed "The Riot"

That's pretty good.

But you're right, they don't make 'em like Oil Can any more.|||The Big Unit b/c it can be looked at as sexual. But El Guapo was the best|||Frank "The Big Hurt" Thomas.

Maybe he doesn't lay on as many big hurts anymore but the nickname is still good.|||"THE MACHINE" ALBERT PUJOLS|||"Pudge" is a great nickname.|||The BIG HURT|||My fav is A-Roid for Alex Rodriguez.
